TapNoise system requirements: which Macs work

TapNoise needs macOS 14 or later. Motion and lid sounds need specific MacBooks, so here is what works on which Mac.

Updated

TapNoise runs on any Mac with macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon or Intel. Some features need a sensor that only some MacBooks have.

Every Mac

  • Key, click, charger and USB sounds, and Tappy.
  • The built-in keyboard, or any keyboard you plug in.
  • Playing through the Mac’s speakers, or through headphones.

Motion sensor

Harder press, louder sound, slap sounds, knocks, and the lift alarm in Guard Mode need a MacBook with a motion sensor. That’s:

  • MacBook Pro with M1 Pro or M1 Max, and later
  • MacBook Air with M2, and later

Other Macs get the charger alarm in Guard Mode, but not the lift alarm.

Lid angle sensor

Lid sounds need a lid angle sensor. That’s the same models as above, plus the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Coding agents

Claude Code, Cursor or the Codex CLI must be installed on the Mac you connect. Knocking to answer needs the motion sensor. Clicking Tappy works on any Mac.

How to check your Mac

TapNoise tells you in Settings when a feature doesn’t apply. For example, Slap sounds shows Slaps need an Apple silicon MacBook from M1 Pro or M2 Air on. and Lid shows This Mac has no lid angle sensor.
