Lid creak and lid sounds: which MacBooks

Lid sounds play while you move the MacBook lid. They need a lid angle sensor, found in some MacBook Pro and Air models and the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Updated

Move the MacBook lid and it creaks. The faster it moves, the more it creaks. The sound depends on your theme.

Which MacBooks have it

Lid sounds need a lid angle sensor. That’s on:

  • MacBook Pro with M1 Pro or M1 Max, and later
  • MacBook Air with M2, and later
  • The 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro

On any other Mac, the Lid card says This Mac has no lid angle sensor.

Turn them on

  1. Open Settings › MacBook.
  2. Under Lid, turn on Lid creak, or Lid synth with some sounds. It’s on by default.

The card shows the lid’s current angle while it’s on.

Good to know

  • Lid sounds only run while TapNoise is on.
  • Lid readings are used as they arrive and aren’t stored.
  • Guard Mode also watches the lid. See Guard Mode.
