What you need.
- A Mac with macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
- For harder-press-louder, slaps, knocks and Guard Mode: a MacBook with a motion sensor, which means MacBook Pro with M1 Pro or M1 Max and later, or MacBook Air with M2 and later.
- For the lid creak: a MacBook with a lid angle sensor, the same models.
- Everything else, all the key, click, charger and USB sounds and Tappy, works on any Mac, with the built-in keyboard or any keyboard you plug in.
Setting it up.
- Open TapNoise. It lives in your menu bar, as a little keycap. Tappy appears on your desktop.
- Allow Input Monitoring. TapNoise asks once, in System Settings › Privacy & Security. That lets it hear which key went down. It never sees what you type.
- Optional: allow Accessibility. Only Knock commands, Clean Mode and the shortcut cheat sheet use it.
Opening it the first time.
TapNoise is signed by its maker but not notarized by Apple, so the first time you open it macOS asks you to confirm.
- Open TapNoise from Applications. macOS says it can’t check it. Click Done.
- Open System Settings › Privacy & Security. Scroll to Security, where it says TapNoise was blocked, and click Open Anyway. Confirm with your password or Touch ID.
- Open TapNoise again and click Open. From then on it opens like any other app. A new download may ask once more.
