Agent sounds

Look away. TapNoise calls you back.

When Claude Code, Codex or Cursor finishes, needs you or hits an error, you hear it. Knock twice on your MacBook to jump straight to the window that’s waiting.

Each cue is built from the keyboard sound you picked, so it sounds like part of your Mac. Done is a rising chime. Needs you is two quick rising pairs. Error is two falling notes. Tappy reacts too: a party when an agent is done, sweat while it waits for you, and ears covered on an error.

TapNoise adds one hook to each agent’s own settings file. The hook sends only which agent it was and what happened: done, needs you or error. It never sends your code or your prompts.

Knock to answer is on by default. When an agent is waiting, a double knock, or a click on Tappy, brings its app forward. Otherwise knocks do what you set under MacBook.

Turn it on.

Settings › Agents

  1. Click the keycap in the menu bar, then Settings, then Agents.
  2. Click Connect next to Claude Code, Codex or Cursor. An agent that isn’t installed shows as not found.
  3. Restart any agent that was already running.
  4. Click Hear them to try the Done, Needs you and Error sounds.

Options.

Play agent sounds

Plays the cue for each agent event. Settings › Agents.

Default: On
Knock twice to answer

When an agent is waiting, a double knock brings its window forward. Needs a motion sensor. Settings › Agents.

Default: On
Connect

Adds TapNoise’s hook to the agent’s settings file. Remove takes it out again. Each agent starts unconnected.

Limits.

  • Claude Code: done, permission prompts (needs you), and errors.
  • Codex: done only. Codex tells TapNoise only when a turn is finished.
  • Cursor: done and errors. Cursor has no hook for approvals yet.
  • The files TapNoise edits are ~/.claude/settings.json, ~/.codex/config.toml and ~/.cursor/hooks.json. Each one is backed up first, to ~/Library/Application Support/TapNoise/Agent hook backups.
  • If you move TapNoise.app, click Repair next to the agent. Clicking Tappy to answer works on any Mac; knocking needs a motion sensor.

Questions.

Does TapNoise read my code or my prompts?

No. The hook tells TapNoise only which agent it was and whether it’s done, needs you or hit an error. Nothing about your agents leaves your Mac.

Should I remove it before I delete TapNoise?

Yes, if you can. Click Remove next to each agent in Settings › Agents first. If you forget, nothing breaks: the hook quietly does nothing once TapNoise is gone.

Will Codex tell me when it needs me?

No. Codex only reports when a turn is done, so there is no needs-you sound for Codex.
