How to allow TapNoise in Input Monitoring

TapNoise needs Input Monitoring to hear which key went down. Here is how to switch it on, and why it never sees the letters you type.

Updated

Input Monitoring is the one permission TapNoise needs. It lets TapNoise hear which key went down, so it can play the right sound. It doesn’t give TapNoise the letters you type.

Switch it on

  1. Click the keycap in the menu bar. When TapNoise needs the permission, the menu shows Needs one permission and an Open Input Monitoring button. Click it. You can also open Settings › General, where a Permission card says Input Monitoring is off. Click Open Settings there.
  2. macOS adds TapNoise to the list and opens System Settings › Privacy & Security › Input Monitoring.
  3. Switch on TapNoise.
  4. TapNoise restarts itself once you switch it on. That’s normal.

Check it worked

The menu no longer says Needs one permission, and your key presses make sounds.

Still not in the list?

See TapNoise is not in Input Monitoring.

Accessibility is a different, optional permission. Only Knock commands, Clean Mode and the shortcut cheat sheet use it.
