Knock commands: play, pause and mute by knocking

Knock your MacBook twice or three times to play or pause music, mute your mic in a call or lock the screen. Knock commands are off until you turn them on.

Updated

Knock on your MacBook, near the trackpad, and TapNoise can do something for you. Two knocks and three knocks each do an action you choose. Typing never counts as a knock.

Knocks need a MacBook with a motion sensor.

Turn them on

  1. Open Settings › MacBook, then find the Knock commands card.
  2. Turn on Knock to control your Mac. It’s off by default.
  3. Set Knock twice and Knock three times to an action.

By default, a double knock plays or pauses, or mutes your mic in a call. A triple knock locks the screen.

The actions

  • Play / pause, or mute mic in calls
  • Play / pause music
  • Mute / unmute microphone
  • Next track
  • Mute / unmute
  • Lock the screen (sends Control-Command-Q)
  • Turn TapNoise on or off
  • Nothing

Accessibility

Play / pause, next track, mute, and lock the screen send keys, so they need Accessibility. If the card says Allow TapNoise to send keys, click Open Settings and turn TapNoise on. The mic, on or off, and nothing actions don’t need it.
