What the agent sounds and reactions mean

Claude Code, Codex and Cursor each play a cue when they finish, need you or hit an error. Here is what each sound means and how to hear it.

Updated

Once an agent is connected, TapNoise plays a short cue in your sound theme when the agent reports back. Tappy reacts to each one.

The three cues

  • Done. A chime when the agent finishes its turn. Claude Code, Codex and Cursor all send this.
  • Needs you. A different cue when Claude Code needs your permission. Codex and Cursor don’t send this.
  • Error. A cue when Claude Code or Cursor hits an error.

Hear them

  1. Open Settings › Agents.
  2. Under Agent sounds, click Done, Needs you or Error to hear each cue.

Turn off Play agent sounds to silence them.

Knock to answer

When an agent is waiting for you, knock twice on your MacBook, or click Tappy, to jump to its window. The Knock twice to answer switch in Settings › Agents turns this on, and it’s on by default. Knocks need a MacBook with a motion sensor. Clicking Tappy works on any Mac.
