Mac Focus controls notification delivery. It is not a universal volume switch for every application, so music and keyboard playback may continue while notification banners are restricted.
Decide which interruption you mean
If banners or message alerts are distracting, configure Focus and its allowed people and apps. If ordinary audio is distracting, adjust the playing application’s volume or off switch.
A local afplay command and an application notification take different paths. Do not assume a Focus rule that hides a banner also silences every sound generated by a process.
Test the specific workflow
Enable your intended Focus, play a short music clip and type with TapNoise. Then test a harmless notification. Notice which controls affected each event.
TapNoise’s Quiet during calls uses microphone activity rather than Focus state. A quiet Focus and an active microphone are separate conditions, so a call can change audio behaviour even with the same Focus enabled.
Keep necessary exceptions deliberate
Allow people or apps you need during the work session, and review the settings after the task. If Focus syncs across devices, a change on the Mac may affect your other Apple devices too.
For a quieter desk, notification noise reduction covers notification choices, while balancing typing sound volume covers ordinary playback. Use both when the problem involves both paths.
