How to try a double-knock microphone mute on MacBook

Configure TapNoise's knock action on supported hardware, test the exact microphone and distinguish device muting from the meeting app's own mute state.

On supported MacBooks, TapNoise can use a double knock to mute or unmute the microphone. Test the actual input device before using the gesture during a meeting.

Configure the action

Open Settings › MacBook › Knock commands and enable Knock to control your Mac. Choose Mute / unmute microphone, or the combined play/pause-or-mute action if you want behaviour to depend on microphone activity.

The feature needs compatible motion hardware. A greyed-out availability message is not fixed by hitting the laptop harder. Use gentle taps and the app’s supported configuration.

Test what changes

Speak a harmless test phrase and inspect the input or use a private call test. TapNoise controls the default microphone’s mute switch where available, or its input level where that is the supported fallback.

A meeting application can use a different microphone and maintain its own mute icon. Do not assume its button always mirrors the device-level state.

Keep a reliable fallback

Know the meeting app’s mute shortcut and visible control. If the gesture does not behave predictably with your device, use those controls instead of depending on an unverified physical action.

For choosing the intended input, read the microphone selector guide. For ordinary typing playback during calls, Quiet during calls is a separate option.
