Lid sounds
Move the lid. The hinge creaks.
A creak that speeds up with the lid, and a little chime when it opens. It needs a MacBook with a lid angle sensor, and it matches your sound theme.

The lid sensor reads the angle of the hinge. While the lid moves, the hinge creaks, and the faster it moves, the more it creaks. The keyboard themes, and Typewriter, get a creak.
Eight-bit and Laser play a chip tone instead. Bubble, Piano, Rain, Paws, Kalimba, Woody and Marbles play a soft tone. Settings shows Lid synth for those themes.
Opening the lid plays a short chime. Tappy says bye when you close it.
Creak or synth
Keyboard themes creak. Tonal and soft themes play a synth tone.
Hello and goodbye
A chime when you open the lid, and Tappy says bye as it closes.
Quiet in calls
Lid sounds stay silent during a call when Quiet during calls is on.
Guard uses it too
With Guard Mode armed, moving the lid more than 15° sounds the alarm.
Turn it on.
Settings › MacBook › Lid
- Click the keycap in the menu bar, then Settings, then MacBook.
- Under Lid, turn on Lid creak, or Lid synth for a tonal or soft theme. It’s on by default.
- To change the sound, pick a theme under Settings › Sounds.
Options.
- Lid creak or Lid synth
Plays while the lid moves. The label follows your sound theme. Settings › MacBook › Lid.
Default: On- Quiet during calls
Lid sounds go silent during calls too. Settings › General › Playback.
Default: On
Limits.
- Needs the lid angle sensor: a MacBook Pro with M1 Pro or M1 Max and later, a MacBook Air with M2 and later, or the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro.
- Without the sensor, Settings says “This Mac has no lid angle sensor.” Key, slap and charger sounds still work.
- Guard Mode’s lid alarm uses the same sensor, so Guard can’t watch the lid on a Mac without it.
Questions.
Can I keep the keys and turn off the lid?
Yes. Turn off Lid creak or Lid synth in Settings › MacBook › Lid. Key, slap and charger sounds don’t change.
Why is my lid a synth tone instead of a creak?
Your theme is tonal or soft: 8-bit, Laser, Bubble, Piano, Rain, Paws, Kalimba, Woody or Marbles. Those themes use a synth tone so the lid fits the keys.
