Clean Mode

Wipe your keyboard. Type nothing.

Clean Mode holds the keyboard and trackpad still while you wipe them, with a countdown so you know when it’s done. Hold Esc for two seconds to finish early.

Pick 30 seconds, one minute or two minutes. When Clean Mode starts, keys, clicks, scrolling and pointer movement are held for that time, and a countdown covers the screen.

Each key or click you press makes a soft bubble pop, so the wipe still sounds like TapNoise. There are at most a dozen pops a second.

TapNoise doesn’t read or keep anything you press during Clean Mode. Those events are dropped, not recorded.

Turn it on.

Settings › Keyboard › Clean Mode

  1. Click the keycap in the menu bar, then Settings, then Keyboard.
  2. Under Clean Mode, choose How long, then click Start.
  3. If it asks, allow TapNoise to hold keys. Clean Mode needs Accessibility.

Options.

How long

Choose 30 seconds, 1 minute or 2 minutes. Settings › Keyboard › Clean Mode.

Default: 1 minute
Start

Starts Clean Mode straight away. It’s also in the menu bar panel.

Finish early

Hold Esc for two seconds to end Clean Mode before the time is up.

Limits.

  • Needs Accessibility. macOS asks the first time. You can also find it under System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility.
  • It stops when the time runs out, or when you hold Esc. If TapNoise quits, macOS removes the hold and input comes back.
  • It needs TapNoise to be unlocked.

Questions.

Does Clean Mode record anything I press?

No. Held keys and clicks are dropped. They are not read or kept.

Why does TapNoise need Accessibility for this?

Holding keys and clicks needs the Accessibility permission. TapNoise never reads your windows or documents.
